so somebody i follow on my dash was unintentionally quite racist and there’s just been post after post after flipping-out post when she was called out on it and blah blah blah end of story:
SHE IS SIXTEEN YEARS OLD YOU GUYS, STOP EXPECTING EVERYBODY TO HAVE THE PERSPECTIVE OF SOMEBODY AT LEAST TWICE HER AGE.
look, even a couple of years will make a huge difference - this isn’t me being ~ageist~ either, a 16 year old deserves just as much respect as every other human being and their happiness, lives and opinions should matter just as much as every other human being’s, but you HAVE to take it all into perspective. You can’t just go off on a bender at a 16 year old expecting them to have the full arsenal of awareness and knowledge and experience of the world that most people don’t get their ENTIRE LIVES. It’s about education and it’s about encouraging empathy, and this insistent refusal to understand that some people just don’t know is what gets well-thinking righteous people in trouble.
I know that 16 year olds like to think that they know everything and I know that probably half the people screeching at her are of similar ages. I just wish that everybody would admit to their own ignorance, their own gaps in their knowledge and perspective, and go about filling those gaps in without running into people screaming at them for not ALREADY KNOWING.
