I do a microscopy blog and follow you, so when i came across this picture
I immediately thought of you. This is a 19th century microscope slide made of butterfly scales and diatoms and is presented here magnified 35x before the picture was taken. You can find the source at http://www.nikonsmallworld.com/gallery/year/1983/8
Thanks for the submission fairefaerie!
Okay. So. Wil Wheaton probably isn’t going to tweet back at me with the circumference of his head so I can make him a pretty space princess crown that fits & present it to him at PAX prime next. (I make crowns out of woven wire & mixed media, did you know?)
But just because he’s not going to measure his head special for me, doesn’t mean that I can’t utilize SCIENCE and figure it out myself.
Quick, somebody find a relatively current photo of Wil’s noggin with an easily measurable object near to it. Like, a can of soda or something? And then I can measure the object and figure out the diameter of his head and extrapolate from there! Right? Right.
And then I can make him a Space Princess Crown with sparkly stars and maybe some planets and give it to him in a decorative box and a print out of my horrible manip with a note that reads “Your life is interesting enough that this might come in handy one day.” That will be sweet, and not that creepy, and kind of nutty enough that it would work. Right? Right.

Progress shot of my Crown of Spades.
It’s for my halloween costume! I’m going to be the queen of spades, but really it’s an excuse to wear red lipstick and make a weird woven wire crown and experiment with sculpey pendants. I used to make woven wire crowns in college all the time - I was going to make a series of them and it would be epic and symbolic and I’d be a super duper famous artists and stuff. But anyway, this is just twisted steel wire and a spool of this gold lanyard I’ve had lying around for years and years. I really like the look of the spades once I’ve flesh them out with the lanyard - it’s so rare that you actually achieve the look you’re going for in the first place, you know? Each spade is going to take me maybe an hour or so of weaving, and then I’m not sure how I’m going to proceed. What do you think so far?
